With contributions by Christine France, Deborah Edwards, David Moore, Mary Turner and Robyn Martin-Webber.

Born in 1911, Australian artist Jean Appleton's extensive career began when she became a full time student at East Sydney Technical College in the late 1920s. Appleton travelled and studied abroad in London, Paris, Milan, Venice and Florence before returning to Australia a highly-trained artist, a peer of modernist Australian artists William Dobell, Donald Friend, Grace Cossington-Smith and Nora Heysen.

Jean Appleton won the Portia Geach Memorial Award in 1965, its inaugural year.
