From the 7th March to the 29th March 2020, Retford Park will host an exhibition of photography by international artist, Matthew Willman.
Willman has created an exclusive photographic collection to help support the magnificent Rhinos, in collaboration with Nelson Mandela.
An unusual partnership between Willman and Mandela celebrated the hopes of a world leader and a young man half his age, connecting people and animals in pictorial history.
Imagine a president sharing with a cameraman his concerns for the animal he loves. Nelson Mandela did just that, in a crowded room of photographers, Nelson saw Matthew Willman who he chose personally to capture a vision for his landscape. That handpicked photographer entered a private and passionate world of a great leader, Nelson Mandela.
With a handshake they embarked on a creative collaboration that lasted through the last ten years of Mandela’s life. They met twice a month to discuss the Nelson Mandela Foundation and its research. This partnership saw the founding of the Zululand Conservation Trust and Zululand Rhino orphanage.
This exhibition aims to create awareness and ask for support in the fight against the poaching crisis and to rescue and rehabilitate injured and orphaned rhinos that have survived poaching or drought related incidents. As Nelson Mandela said “Education is the key to success, and without awareness and education we would not be able to successfully do what we do to save this endangered species.”
