Painter in Paradise: William Dobell in New Guinea

This is the first exhibition to focus solely on the works inspired by William Dobell's two long expeditions to New Guinea in 1949 and 1950 following the furore of his 1948 Archibald Prize win.

Dobell not only took his sketchbooks but a camera, and recorded on film daily life in Mount Hagen and Nondugl, as well as rare early images of the Upper Sepik region.

These photographs and sketches formed the basis of many paintings he was to produce in the following two decades.

This exhibition catalogue is a fully illustrated publication including full-colour images (paintings, photographs, works on paper, cultural artifacts) with curator essay.
