Caroline’s Diary: A Woman’s World in Colonial Australia

by Anne Philp

Caroline’s Diary brings to life the courage of a young Englishwoman raised in comfortable family circumstances at the time of London’s Great  Exhibition in 1851. Caroline reveals her busy social life full of parties and fine dresses and her family’s forced flight to Australia from her beloved home. She found love in Sydney, but her husband moved the family from the city life she had always known to a relatively isolated country life. She made a comfortable life at Buckinbah in sparsely populated New South Wales, at Suamarez on the outskirts of Armidale and later at Wivenhoe, south of Sydney  and near Camden.
