The Australian postal service, which began officially in Sydney in the infant colony of New South Wales in 1809, is the nation's oldest continuing business. The post has always played a major role in the social and commercial life of the country, a fact recognised over a hundred years ago when the decision was made to build a new General Post Office in Sydney. That building dominated the city for manyt years and at the time of its competion was the largest and most extravagant to have been designed by an Australian architect.
