Product Description

The Melba Conservatorium of Music originated as part of the University of Melbourne until its controversial Director parted ways with the University. As a private Conservatorium it was known as the Marshall-Hall Conservatorium, The Albert Street Conservatorium, The Melbourne Conservatorium and finally finished its days as The Melba Conservatorium.

The Melba Conservatorium of Music by Katherine (Kay) Gilmour traces the fascinating life of the Melba Conservatorium from its inception, through separation from the University, following the many twists and turns as a private institution until its formal closure on 1 January 2009. From that time the proceeds of the sale of the Conservatorium have been invested and built upon to provide scholarships with The Melba Opera Trust. The Opera Salon Series this year has showcased the fruit of those scholarships through a partnership between The National Trust of Australia and The Melba Opera Trust. This book is available from the National Trust gift and bookshop at Como House or through email order from melba@gilmours.net.au.
